Because the Guangzhou Nansha International Cruise Home Port is located in the Nansha New Area of Guangdong Pilot Free Trade Zone, with a total planned shoreline of 1.6 kilometers, four 100000 to 225000 ton cruise berths are planned to be built, which can accommodate the world's largest cruise ships.

In 2017, the Guangzhou Nansha International Cruise Home Port project was rated as a provincial key project and included in the Guangdong Provincial Federation of Trade Unions Labor Competition. The construction and completion of the Nansha International Cruise Home Port will vigorously promote the cruise industry chain in the Guangdong Hong Kong Macao Greater Bay Area in areas such as cruise tourism, cruise industry development, cruise policies, and cruise culture. China Communications City Investment Corporation (CCCC) is actively building this project into a landmark, water gateway, and bay area hub of Guangzhou, promoting the construction of a livable, business friendly, and tourist friendly city in Guangzhou, as well as the economic development of tourism and industries around the route.

On November 17, 2019, the Guangzhou Nansha International Cruise Home Port opened, and nearly 1200 tourists boarded the Costa Cruises "New Romance" docked at the main berth of the port, embarking on their maiden voyage from Nansha, Guangzhou to the Yaeyama Islands in Japan. The Guangzhou Nansha International Cruise Home Port is the largest cruise home port complex in China, achieving seamless connection with the subway for the first time and installing the most powerful shore power equipment in China to achieve green and environmental protection.
